Tool Use and Maintenance Seminar
This is a three-day intensive workshop on the use of selected hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in the art of guitar making. Each student will construct a Telecaster ® style electric guitar body that will then be used as a project instrument during the Repair Course. This project will allow students to practice some of the most important skills used in guitar making: measuring, milling, joinery, squaring, sanding, assembly, and finishing. Safe woodworking practices are emphasized at all times. The workshop gives incoming students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Roberto-Venn shop environment and tool use and maintenance. Although not required, it is especially recommended for students with no previous woodworking experience, as well as those who may want to brush up on their skills. Taught by Kris Olsen and Matt Baker, the Tool Use and Maintenance Seminar is only open to students already accepted to class. It is not offered as a stand-alone course. The cost of the course, including materials, is $325. The seminar is normally scheduled to meet on the three days prior to the Guitar Making course. Included in the price of the
seminar are all the materials, hardware and electronics necessary to complete
your guitar, including an alder wood body blank and maple, fretted neck. As we
progress through the Repair Course, you will use this guitar to practice many
procedures including set-ups, fretwork , finish work and trouble shooting.
This guitar then goes home with you to become a permanent member of your
collection and a trusty player while you are in
The Tool Seminar of Fall, 2003, shows off their toolboxes. Now the hard part starts!
